Writer's Block: Half a Glass
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:07 pm[Error: unknown template qotd]I think my 'natural' self is an optimist. To the extent that the glass actually looks about two-thirds full from over here... (See what I was doing there? It's all about perspective! Hee hee!)
One of the reasons I love Merlin (the show and the character) so much is that he's optimistic, and engaged with the world, and somehow he manages to enjoy himself even when he doesn't expect to. I love love love him for that, darling young man.
However, I must say that years of on-again off-again depression have taken their toll on me and put a dent in all that. I strive to get back to my naturally sunny ways, but sometimes I just don't have the energy to even pretend. I think nevertheless that most people consider me an optimist - though that may be the inevitable result of an Australian living in sweet pessimistic old England! (Even in 2005 when the Poms won the Ashes, my colleagues weren't partying or enjoying it while they could, but just gloomily predicting the Aussies would win them back the following year... Which we did, but surely that wasn't the point! I love England, don't get me wrong, but on the whole Australia is a cheerier place. I think.)
But getting back to me, before I offend too many people... On the whole, I probably balance out as a realist, now I think about it.
