Writer's Block: Spirits
Aug. 28th, 2008 09:28 am[Error: unknown template qotd]Actually, ghosts kind of make sense to me. I don't believe in ghosts or an afterlife or in anything supernatural, partly because I've never encountered anything remotely like. However, ghosts fit into how I see the world working. Given that we are made up of matter and energy, then I can understand a bit of our energy getting left behind or imprinting itself on a particular place. So for now I don't believe in ghosts, but if I encountered something that seemed to fit with that, then that's how I'd interpret it.
I try to keep an open mind because it's arrogant to assume there aren't 'more things in heaven and earth' and so on... I mean, humanity is very good at thinking we know all the answers, and then being proved wrong. But we're also suckers for a good story. What I wrote above is the core of a good yarn, and indeed has been told and re-told in many great stories over the centuries. If I encountered something that seemed like a ghost, then maybe I'd just be projecting my 'story' of ghosts onto it; maybe I'd be giving meaning, a culturally based meaning, to something that was actually nothing like...
So I guess that boils down to: No, but I do like a good ghost story!
