Not only has another month passed, but the whole year's about to bite the dust, so it's an excellent time for reflection!

It has, as you may have noticed, been a difficult month for me 'n' my novel. Thank you to all who encouraged me along the way! A brief period of 'mulling things over' turned into an unexpected crisis in confidence. Which was either helped or hindered (can't quite decide which) by a sudden flurry of writing Merlin fic, and rather dark stuff, too. Oh, and we went to Florence for five nights sans my computer, which I suppose I can use as an excuse, although my paper-and-pen got used for Merlin slashing rather than Keats novelising.

When writing Endymion, Keats was conscious of making 'one bare circumstance' into an epic poem. He was worried about whether there was enough material there to really support and fill the whole. I presume to think I have an inkling of how he felt! My one bare circumstance is the 'What if?' idea that got me started in the first place - whether it's enough to make a novel out of, I don't know. My mulling and my crisis was the result of me reaching the point where this all either grew into a real adventure story, or just stayed the same course. Still a Ripping Yarn, I hope, but with fewer external events and happenings. It was clear to me that I'm not trying to write The Da Vinci Code. However, I was left wondering what on earth I am trying to write!

Eventually I decided I just had to stay the course. Which is probably obvious to everyone but me. It still took me a while to get going again, but the last three days have been terrific, and my current word count is 31671. Not too bad, I guess, after four months of work!

Here's to many more words in 2009! Not just from me, but from all my LJ friends. :-) Happy new year, guys...
