dazed and confused

So... I have recently re-read The Mists of Avalon for the first time since I was a teenager - which is a long time ago now, which in itself may explain a great deal. But I have long cherished this distinct memory of - well, on that night when Arthur invited Lancelot into his and Guinevere's bed, for the sake of her conceiving - I have this really clear memory of either Arthur or Lancelot reaching past her to the other man... Just the touch of a hand. But it rocked my world. One of my formative slash experiences. And this time round, it didn't seem to even be there! Though there was the remembered edginess about the homosocial nature of what bound Arthur and his Companions so close...

Am I imagining that it was even there, or did I just manage to vague out at the wrong moment during my recent reading...? Argh! :-)

And of course I am totally traumatised at the moment, having spent 23 hours thinking that Harry Cunningham was dead. I mean, hurrah for Silent Witness always pushing pushing pushing. But even I was suprised at how bleak that made me feel.

And this just in. It's the end of an era. My old and formerly trusty sewing machine has finally f***ing snuffed it. Not quite as traumatic as the Harry thing, but it feels strange. Back in the day, my Mum and I used to make our own clothes and curtains and such. And I bought my own sewing machine with my very first pay cheque. (Looong time ago...) It was This Whole Big Thing about me and my own life. Well, I can't remember the last time I actually sewed a garment, but still - it came in plenty handy for mending and such. And now its bobbin has finally bobbed its last.

It's just one of those weeks, isn't it?

Though I suppose I am grateful, in a way, as they now make purple sewing machines. I mean to say. Purple.

The Arthur/Lancelot thing is there. But it's not mentioned during the sex scene: it comes up later when Gwenhwyfar and Arthur are arguing. And there are suggestions throughout the text that Lancelot is pretty much gay except for Gwenheyfar.

(Yes, it was among my slashily-formative books too.)

See, I was even paying extra attention at that point, because I figured if it wasn't mentioned at the time, it must be now when they're angsting over it all... {sighs} I must have been having a real senior moment! :-) I will go back and track it down. I am determined to re-live it! :-D

Thanks for the input. ♥

Man I have so much reading to do once my course is over. Sounds like I need to add that one to my list as well :D

Aww your poor sewing machine :c a purple one does sound rather tempting though.

[identity profile] slashweaver.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of reading, yes! :-) And this is a weighty one in its own right, but I think one of the modern retellings that should probably be on our shortlists...

Oh my yes, purple... I think just about everything comes in purple these days... so if you hear of a sudden house fire in this vicinity, and someone replacing all they owned with purple versions, you shall Know What Happened. :-D

And of course I am totally traumatised at the moment, having spent 23 hours thinking that Harry Cunningham was dead.

We were a day behind as we were out on Monday so watched it last night and were totally shocked. Then I cheated a bit and looked for spoilers so I was spared the time thinking he was dead. As my husband said "you expect that sort of thing on Spooks, not Silent Witness" but it was terrific drama.

It was terrific drama! :-) I mean, we're all pretty media savvy these days - but even I was thinking, with the way they filmed it, they didn't leave themselves any way out. (Though of course they did. :-D) It's not a show I follow fannishly at all, but simply watch - so I thought maybe Tom Ward was moving on, and good on them for doing that hard rather than soft. But oh my. My little heart was broken. Partly because I'm one of the ones thinking re Harry and Nikki, 'When will they come to their senses and get together?' :-D I loved that they actually used that line in the show! XD

Yes, because that must be what most of the viewers were thinking *g*.

I don't follow it fannishly either, but I'm increasingly enjoying watching it. We used to watch when it was first on with Amanda Burton, got bored with her and only picked it up again last season. Now I really like the team and hadn't actually realised how much until I thought they'd killed Harry.

Couldn't help you here. You do know my dislike for that book and for everything related to Lancelot and Guenivere. I just remember that I was really shocked as a child when I read about it. Nearly crushed my love of knights and Camelot. Thanks God I read about Mordred or Gawain then xD

A purple sewing machine sounds GREAT ÖÖ

One of the things I love about the accummulated Arthurian legends is that they're so wide-ranging and encompass so many perspectives that there is something in there for each of us to love. I'm glad you found your thing! And of course we end up making such great friends through the legends. ♥

Ah, purple, yes... I probably shan't miss my old sewing machine at all! :-D

♥♥♥

I saw one pink! But, hey, I'm too lazy to have my own sewing machine oo

[identity profile] archaeologist-d.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read that in years.

I think I'd cry if my sewing machine died. I love that thing. Sorry yours is gone.

[identity profile] slashweaver.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
For obvious reasons, I am revisiting all the old Arthurian classics! :-D

Thank you for the sympathy, hon. I think I would feel it more if I was still using it for creative things, as you are. ♥ But it's definitely the end of an era! :-D

Gay in the Mists

[identity profile] jakujin.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Just have to nostalge my nostalge too. Hm... I thought the gleam of gay occured in Lancelot's memories of that night: that he reached over and Touched Arthur, as obviously was the Truth behind his whole love for that Christian twit who passes in this book for Guinevere. Unless I made that up.

Maybe, back then, a mere hint electrified us, and by now our senses are dulled?
